Before the “clean girl aesthetic” told us to tone it down… The 90s told us to shine louder! 💅💄

Metallic wasn’t just a trend it was a full blown obsession. And if you were there, you already know: subtlety was not invited. We wore metallic everything. Shirts that caught the light from across the room, purses that practically doubled as mirrors, and yes even dresses that said, “I did not come here to blend in.” But the real magic? It lived in our makeup bags.

Every lipstick had that signature chrome tint. Not shimmer, chrome! Reflective, high shine, almost futuristic. L'Oréal had formulas that felt like pure luxury at the drugstore level. And if you were lucky enough to level up to MAC or Urban Decay? You were officially that girl. Be honest, were you a MAC girl, or were you mixing and matching drugstore gems like the rest of us?

That iconic red lip with the chrome finish? Everything. And then came the copper tones..warm, glowing, almost molten in the right light. It wasn’t just makeup. It was a statement.

And can we talk about the smell for a second? There was something about opening a brand new lipstick back then. The soft click of the tube, that slightly sweet, almost vanilla scent, the way it glided on so smooth it was an experience. Not rushed. Not clinical. Ritualistic.

Tell me you remember that without telling me you remember.

Of course, no 90s lip look was complete without the combo: dark lip liner and a lighter metallic lipstick. A look that, somehow, made everyone’s lips look fuller long before fillers were even a conversation. We’re talking deep liner with frosted pinks, golds, and nudes layered in the center. Overlined, blended (or not), and worn with confidence. Icons like Pamela Anderson made glossy chrome lips a full personality. Brandy gave us rich, defined liner moments. Cindy Crawford? Effortless glam with a metallic twist.

Which look were you trying to recreate in your mirror before school?

And the eyes? Just as bold. Just as unapologetic. Those icy blue and silver frosted shadows from CoverGirl; you know the ones. The tiny compact. The sponge tip applicator that somehow did everything. No fancy brushes, no YouTube tutorials… just vibes and determination. We didn’t blend, we packed, layered, and hoped for the best. And honestly? It worked.

Now let’s talk about the nails. Metallic nail polish was its own art form. High shine silvers, deep chromes, reflective purples colors that demanded attention. We grew our nails long, painted them carefully (or not so carefully), and then sat completely still praying they would dry. Because there was nothing worse than thinking you nailed it… only to smudge it five minutes later… And still we did it again. Because the goal was never perfection. The goal was impact.

Everything about 90s beauty was about making a statement. Bold lips. Bold eyes. Bold nails. Even the ads understood the assignment; matching lipstick with nail polish, glossy campaigns that felt like art, not just marketing. Brands had to earn our attention back then. And they did it with color, texture, and attitude.

Before minimalism took over… we were out here reflecting light from every angle. And honestly? We might’ve been onto something.

So be honest if you found a frosted lipstick at the bottom of your bag today… would you wear it again?

Because I would.
